Alabama's election's chief said President Joe Biden could be left off the ballot in Alabama because the state’s certification deadline is several days before the Democratic Party’s convention. Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, a Republican, made the statement Tuesday. A similar concern was raised in Ohio that Biden could be left off the ballot in that state. Allen said the state’s Aug. 15 certification deadline is four days before the Democratic National Convention begins. However, the Republican-controlled Alabama Legislature changed the deadline in 2020 to accommodate the GOP convention.

The two Republicans running for Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District faced off in a debate ahead of the April 16 runoff. Dick Brewbaker, a businessman and former state senator, and Caroleene Dobson, an attorney and political newcomer, are vying for the GOP nomination. The winner will face the Democratic nominee in the closely watched November election. The Democratic nominee will be decided in a runoff between Shomari Figures and state Rep. Anthony Daniels. Dobson and Brewbaker traded verbal jabs in the debate as Dobson criticized legislative votes that Brewbaker had taken on taxes and business regulation. Brewbaker fired back that Dobson was repeatedly lying about his record.

The two Democrats running for Alabama’s newly redrawn congressional district stressed their experience — one at the federal level and one at the Alabama Legislature — in a debate that aired Tuesday night. Shomari Figures served as deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland while Anthony Daniels is the state House Minority Leader. They will meet in a Tuesday runoff to decide the Democratic nomination for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. The winner of the Democratic runoff will face the Republican nominee in the closely watched November general election.  A federal court redrew the district last year after ruling the state's previous map likely violated the Voting Rights Act.
